Google Voice with your existing number

leave a comment »

I had always wondered why it was that a new phone number was required during the sign-up process.  The idea of having 1 number which can forward calls to all of your devices (landlines, cellphones, etc.) is great, but my best guess (not related to technology) is that people are “philosophically opposed” to changing their main phone number.  If Google can find a way to port the other Voice features to this setup it would remove a significant barrier to widespread adoption.  That said, if anyone has info on why a separate number is required to access all of the Google Voice features, please let me know.

The Almost Unified Inbox

I love Gmail, but this still doesn’t make up for the lack of push IMAP support on the iPhone.

Gmail drops “Beta” label

leave a comment »

Google has finally given the go-ahead for Gmail to conquer the world’s Inbox.  To be honest, I liked when they called it beta, almost like they were working to make it even more awesome than it already was.  As such, I have enabled the Labs feature to put Beta back under Gmail in my Inbox.

Google Wave at I/O

with 2 comments

For those who haven’t seen it, here’s the video from Google’s Wave demo at its I/O conference.  Given what is already known about HTML 5’s capabilities, this is even better news for web developers.

Google Sync for Mobile

leave a comment »

Good, but not enough to drop MobileMe just yet; add push Gmail, and fix the part where it deletes your existing contacts and I’m there.

As far as the part where deletes your contacts, this is normal Exchange behavior (so I’m told), but I’m still confused: who in their right mind would do this? As an alternative, if Google already has instructions on how to do a proper IMAP setup for the iPhone, why can’t they just change the email setup in the next version of the software to implement Google Sync on top of IMAP with no changes to your existing contacts when the account is created?

As for me, I’ll probably hold off until they add Gmail or find a way around the other issue.
